Johanna Rolland started her political career working with Jean-Marc Ayrault, former mayor of Nantes. She was elected to the city council in 2009, appointed deputy mayor for education and youth as well as urban policy and projects in 2012. In April 2014, Johanna Rolland became the first ever female mayor of Nantes and president of Nantes Metropole. Since 2020, she is also the President of the association of French metropolis (France Urbaine).
