Burkhard Jung has been the Mayor of Leipzig since 2006, after being re-elected twice. He is also the Vice-President of the Association of German Cities and Vice-President of the Association of Saxon Cities and Municipalities. Before entering politics, he qualified as a teacher of German and Protestant Theology and taught in Münster and Siegen. After German reunification, he established and directed the Leipzig Protestant Educational Centre. He was also responsible for Leipzig's bids for the Olympics and the Football World Cup from 2001 to 2003.
